Important news Italy

The date for the installation of the new Pope is not yet known, but it currently looks likely to be between 19-24 March. There will be an unusually large number of visitors in Rome in the run-up, both to see the results of the Conclave and for the installation. People planning to visit around this period should ensure that they have confirmed accommodation before arrival, and should be prepared for very large crowds especially around the Vatican City and St Peter’s Square. Security will be tight, and some parts of the Vatican City will be off-limits to tourists for some days. There will be an increased risk of petty crime, including pick pocketing and bag snatching. Please ensure you have adequate travel insurance, and also bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) card with you.

Local public transport strikes may affect travel at short notice. On Friday 22 March and Monday 25 March 2013 transport strikes are due to take place.
